OCCUPATIONAL DRIVER'S LICENSE PACKET

Procedures for Occupational Driver's License

  1.  Obtain an sr-22 insurance policy. This is a special insurance policy for persons in you position, it may be obtained from your automobile insurance company.                                                                                                                

  2.  Obtain a certified copy of your Texas Driving Record from Texas Department of Public Safety. For instructions on how to obtain the driving record, contact Texas Dept. of Public Safety at: 512-424-2600. You may also obtain information about this form from the dps website: www.dps.texas.gov                                                               

  3. Prepare the Petition for Occupational Driver's License (Must be completed in full prior to filling).                               You will be assigned a case number when you file. Filing Fee is $46.00.  (Money Order or Cahiers Check)        

  4.  Hours and Work Schedule from Employer.                                                                                                                      

  5. Sign the Petition in front of a Notary Public. DO NOT sign the Petition UNTIL you are in front of the Notary in our Office.                                                                                                                                      NOTE: YOU WILL NEED ONE COPIES OF EVERTYTHING THAT YOU FILE WITH THE CLERK.

                 After you have completed the Petition, received your SR-22, copy of your Driving Record and all paperwork requested, bring it in the Justice of the Peace Office to be notrarized, pay a fee of $46.00 and request a hearing date.

ON YOUR HEARING DATE, bring the following with you to the hearing:                                                                     

  • One copy of the SR-22, Certificate of Liability Insurance.                                                                                                 

  • One copy of Certified copy of your Driving Record                                                                                                          

  • One copy of the Employer Letter verifying hours of employment and/or essential need documents.                   

  • One copy of Petition for Occupation License.                                                                                                                     

It may take up to four weeks for the Department of Public Safety to issue an Occupational Driver's License. A certified copy of the signed Order granting occupational driver's license will serve as the license until the DPS send you the official occupational driver's license in the mail.


ORDER IS ONLY GOOD FOR 45 DAYS, DO NOT DELAY IN SENDING YOUR COPY TO THE STATE.       


After you receive the license from the DPS, you must carry the following in you vehicle at all times. 

  1. The occupational driver's license

  2. The SR-22 Insurance certificate

  3. A certified copy of the Order granting Occupational Driver's License.
